I like to ride my bicycle....

Norfolk is perfect for cyclists. With its combination of winding country roads, quiet lanes, forests and bridlepaths there is always a view to surprise you. Even if you haven't ridden a bike for years, the gentle contours of the landscape are never too challenging and you are never far away from a welcoming local pub or teashop so you can re-charge your batteries.

Whether you prefer the refreshing sea breezes or leafy countryside you will find a route to suit you. There are plenty of places to hire a bike once you get here or you can bring your own bicycle - even on the train.

National Cycle Network

The National Cycle Network is a linked series of paths which are designed to make cycling fun, safe and simple. One third of the Network is completely free from motor traffic, using old railway paths, forest tracks, country parks and bridleways, and the rest uses quiet minor roads and traffic-calmed streets in towns and cities.

These paths are a great place for children and new cyclists to practice their cycling skills and many are just the right length for a day ride.

The network is being developed right across the UK but already offers routes through Norfolk. You can click here to find out more.

In the forest

In the heart of the largest lowland pine forest in the UK at Thetford, you will find miles of trails especially for cyclists. You can hire a mountain bike from BikeArt at the High Lodge Forest Centre and join one of the organised rides, or take your own bike and explore the forest at your leisure.

Family trails vary in length between two and six miles and there is also a black route which is only for the more experienced and energetic mountain biker.

Cycling Discovery Maps

The East of England Tourist Board has produced an excellent range of Cycling Discovery Maps to help you explore Norfolk by bike.

Each map covers a route of between 13 and 30 miles and tells you about places of interest, pubs and tearooms on the way where you can take a well deserved rest.
